The presiding Bishop of Winners’ Chapel, Bishop David Oyedepo has called for the restriction and regulation of free access to social media in Nigeria. Bishop Oyedepo the Chancellor of Landmark University, Omu Aran, Kwara State made this call on Friday 18th of June during the 7th Convocation ceremony of the University.

Bishop Oyedepo while delivering a speech on “Combating the Challenge of Education without Integration”, called for urgent steps to checkmate students’ unfettered access to social media.

The cleric who described social media as a monster ravaging the lives of the youth advised that they must wake from their slumber to deal with the menace of the social media, emphasizing that the social media unconsciously robbed people of their future by robbing them of their time.

Bishop Oyedepo who is also the Chancellor of Covenant University had argued that social media saga had eroded the substance of destiny of most youths today. He revealed that social media that was supposed to be a plus had suddenly become a major minus for youths.

He stressed that today’s generation whose honour has been whipped off by social media were on the wrong side of history.

The Bishop was of the opinion that any social media content that doesn’t add value to life should be restricted.

He observed that today’s youth are so obsessed with the social media that they hardly have time left to think, plan, programme and engage productively in the pursuit of any task.

“We must device means to put a check on free access to social media particularly those that are not adding values.  We must wake up from our slumber to deal with this monster. It unconsciously robs people of their future by robbing them of their time,” he emphasised.
