Nigerians have been told to review the jumbo pay of politicians. This was part of the charges released by the Diocesan and the President of Ijesa North-East Anglican Diocese, Rt. Rev. Joseph Alaba Funso Olusola on the occasion of the just concluded Synod of the Diocese.
Bishop Olusola noted that this became necessary in the face of the dwindling fortunes of the country which does not resonate with the welfare of Nigerians.
He said, “In light of the pressing economic challenges facing our nation, the need to review the exorbitant salaries and allowances of politicians in Nigeria has never been more urgent.”
Going further, he added, “The disparity between the lavish compensation of our political leaders and the economic conditions of the average Nigerian is both unsustainable and morally indefensible. As stewards of public resources, our leaders are called to exemplify humility, integrity, and stewardship.
“The extravagant pay of politicians, in stark contrast to the struggles of ordinary citizens, underlines the principles of justice and equity upon which our society would be built. It is imperative that we advocate for a more equitable distribution of resources, ensuring that the realities of the nation and aligns with the principles of public service.”
The cleric did not leave out the church solution to the extravagant nature of Nigerians as he also called on the church to show love, compassion and empathy to ensure that the interests of the poor and the less privileged are taken care of.
According to him, “The Christian faith calls us to live out the values of empathy and compassion, prioritizing the needs of the poor and vulnerable,” quoting Luke 3.14 he emphasized the importance of contentment and fairness in compensation.
“As a church, we join other people of good conscience, against the gross inequalities perpetuated by the current political pay structure, by advocating for a review and reduction of politicians’ salaries.
“We suggest a governance system that prioritizes the welfare of all citizens, fosters economic justice, and upholds the dignity of public office. We call upon our leaders to embrace a spirit of service and sacrifice, reflecting the values of humility and accountability that are central to our faith and essential for the progress and stability of our nation.
Bishop Olusola also called on the Governor of Osun State, Senator Ademola Adeleke to take note of some of the basic needs of the indigenes of the state.
He called on the governor to offer “what is reasonable to workers in our public institutions, and also actively guide private businesses in the state as part of the overall efforts to increase minimum wage across the nation.
“Given the increased cost of living in Nigeria, largely driven by the removal of petroleum subsidy, we cannot deny the biting effect of the surging inflation, that is significantly affecting the purchasing power of average Nigerian worker.
“The government of Osun State must take into account the unique economic conditions and cost of living in our area. What is considered a reasonable wage in one state may not suffice in our state, due to varying levels of inflation and living expenses.”
Bishop Olusola also took the advantage to speak widely on the state of the nation bothering on the state of security in Nigeria, war on insurgency, economy, education, GMO seeds, private ranches for cattle, bullying in schools and colleges, today’s dressings and Christian dressings, cultism in schools and the society, rape and suicide in Nigeria today.
