It’s exactly about this time last year that I was one of the guests to a friend’s Christmas service in his house. We had a good time, all night praising God. Very refreshing, indeed.

After the party he gave us the advantage of seeing his home garden. Hitherto, I had never been thinking about this. But what I saw that day inspired me, that I jokingly told him, this is a “Garden of Eden.”  Inside his garden were fresh vegetables in December, pawpaw, and other things. In fact he also had fowl and goat therein. Promptly I got motivated, that I made up my mind that it was doable within my own domain too.

By the special grace of God, even with my limited resources, I got a fence round a small space in my yard successfully, and I began to do one thing or another with it.

In the last count we have got some works in the garden. In the compound you can find plantain, cassava, vegetables, tomatoes, pawpaw, and even yams. I have even tried my hands on snail farming, and I am working on keeping poultry and other things in the near future.

Doing this is not that one is short of what to eat when needed, or whether it is to fetch money, as it is not on a commercial scale, it is not that there are too much a time to play with, but it is an acknowledgement of a fact that we can all make contributions to feed ourselves and feed our communities wherever we find ourselves.

For a long time this has been said, it has been preached, some of our singers have waxed melodious music with it that we should farm and feed ourselves. But it appears we find it very difficult to do. Some people believe it is demeaning to identify with farming.

We have also noticed that Nigerians have degenerated to a people that can no more feed themselves. All we cry about now is ‘Ebi n pa wa’, (We are hungry). Rather than looking inwards, and see how we can help ourselves, all we try to do is to blame others for our predicaments.

I have many friends who are almost sworn enemies of this government led by President Bola Tinubu. They always jump at any opportunity to blame the government for all the problems in the land. My message to them anytime we engage one another is to look beyond government. Many people always believe that there is nothing they can do without government. That somebody has irresponsible parents does not stop him or her from being successful in life, though there could be hindrances. Such hindrances could be stepping stones to unimaginable success.

It is true that the government has a pivotal role to play in our day to day life. But where you have grossly unconcerned and irresponsible people as your leader, what do you do? You need to fend for yourself. Therefore one of the solutions to our individual problems is to think outside the box, to think beyond what we can gain from the government.

Like it is said, ‘It’s in you,’ I believe the solution partly lies in us.

These days the farming routine has entered my daily activities. Every morning, or once in a day, I try as much to visit my farm to check the plants, do some wettings this dry season. Look for some relevant information online. Facebook, YouTube and TikTok are full of them. It’s now a game I am delighted to play, and the way the plants grow has been encouraging.

What I have just done to do a small farm in my domain does not solve all problems that are associated with food, but there are others who can take it beyond what I have done and get solution to their problems and that of others. We can all send out the campaign of Operation Feed Yourself wherever you are, most especially those of us who live in green areas. That’s at individual level.

Our various governments can do much more. Local and State governments can mobilize their people and support them for this kind of campaign. I think when we can feed ourselves, when we have something to do, we will have other better things to attract our interest rather than idling doing unproductive and satanic things.

I know many of my other friends who have adopted this home farming project and they are enjoying it. One even has our local wrapping leaves in his compound, I have also transplanted it into my compound. If you have not tried Home Garden, please, go and do something on it in the coming year. It is my prayer that the Year 2025 will launch Nigeria into an era of prosperity. By this time next year, we will all live to testify. May Nigeria succeed.
