For an umpteenth time, the Oluwo of Iwoland, Oba Abdul-Rasheed Adewale Akanbi, Telu has publicly renounced the worship of idols both in his palace and in the entire Iwoland. The traditional ruler made this open condemnation at an open air crusade conducted by Iwo born Prophet Samson Oluwamodede led Prayer Centre Church of God Worldwide, in conjunction with the leaders and members of Christian Association of Nigeria in Iwo, in Osun State.

Oba Adewale as a very special guest at a well attended crusade that attracted thousands of attendees in an open remark condemned the worshipping of idols in Yorubaland which he described as one of the things that has cause serious setback for the western part of the country.

According to him, the northerners have been able to wield more power than their southern counterparts for their rejection of idol worshipping in their land.

”Do you know where the power of Nigeria lies today? It is in the north, because they have a strong aversion for idols. You cannot see any idols around them because they made God the foundation of their land,” he explained.

The traditional ruler who said that idols were troubling Yorubaland, and that explained its political backwardness noted that before power could shift to Yorubaland, the people must refrain from worshipping idols.

The monarch who led in a number of praise and worship songs, quoting copiously from the Bible affirmed that traditional rulers were not representatives of deities, but they rather represented God in their domains, and they should not harbour idols that are like rivals to the King of kings which they represented, reasoning that their forebears had misled them in believing in the powers of idols.

”Sango, Ogun, Oya, Osun, among other deities are nothing before God. They have no place in the origin of Yorubaland. Our ancestors who have reigned as kings throughout Yorubaland misled us. The position of kings has no connection with idols. Kings should not have any links to idols or deities,” he said.

Before in an interview the traditional ruler had said, “I am clean because I am not an Idol worshiper and I don’t believe in any other gods. That is why I am advocating that the dirty aspects of our culture should be removed. Every aspect of the culture or practice that asks you to sacrifice another person should be thrown away. I am not Igbakeji Orisa. (I am not second in command to any gods.) I am above them. I tell them where they should be put. I am a commander over Orisa, I command them, they don’t command me. I am the one to tell them the location where the idol worshippers should put their Orisa. I relocated the Orisa that had been inside my palace for over 800 years. I told them to remove it and put it somewhere outside the palace. There must not be any other lesser gods in a king’s domain. God is a jealous God and he will not watch you elevating an idol to his equal.”

Oluwo maintained that power will not shift to the Yoruba people unless idol worshipping is completely eradicated. He reasoned that Nigeria would remain backwards should the people, particularly traditional rulers, continue to worship idols.

The monarch who also condemned traditional rulers who worship idols in Yorubaland in his speech thanked Prophet Oluwamodede and Christian leaders in the town for organising such a cleansing crusade in Iwoland, as he called on them to ensure the eradication of idols in community.

He, described Prophet Samson Oluwamodede as an ‘illustrious’ son of Iwoland.

The crusade, tagged ‘Total Deliverance,’ took place between Saturday 18 and Sunday 19, September, 2021.

Prophet Oluwamodede, who is a son of the soil also gave out gifts items to the less privileged persons at the end of the programme.

Meanwhile, this open condemnation has been variously commended by social media commentators who saw the development as a kind of personal divine revelation to the traditional ruler, as a way forward not only for Iwoland but also other parts of Nigeria.

According to those commenting,“The Lord has spoken through Oluwo…Ride on sir, Hallelujah!” writes Oriowo Victoria, while Femi Olaomo wrote “To God be the glory,” and Omo Wolii has this in his comment, “I am happy to watch Oluwo of Iwo doing this. Glory be to God once more. This is a total deliverance revival for the Nation.” Busola Akinrodoye wrote, “Henceforth, God will forgive the king with his short comings and uphold him to serve God all through his life.”
