The presentation which was chaired by Mr. Femi Adesina, a foremost journalist and the spokesman of former President Mohammadu Buhari, was witnessed by many distinguished journalists across print, broadcast and online media took place at Sir Kessington Adebutu Media Resource Centre of the Nigerian Institute of Journalism, Ogba in Lagos.
At the presentation, many issues that bothered on the main topic were touched by various contributors among which were Mr. Gbenga Adefaye, the provost of the Nigerian Institute of Journalism, Mrs. Oruoma Odum, a lecturer at NIJ, Mrs. Funmi Falobi, Blessing Oladunjoye,Ms. Betty Abah, Funke Fayemi of NAWOJ and Wole Soyinka Centre for Investigative Journalism, and Dr. Evans Emmanuel of West Africa Theological Seminary.
Speaking at the event, Mr Femi Adesina, said it was ungodly to discriminate against women in any aspect of life since they were also created in God’s image.
To Mr. Adefaye, a journalism trainer citing the situation around him said, he did not see any reason to discriminate against women in journalism, saying, “I don’t see any gender in journalism, I have seen in many women fantastic journalists,” even though it was possible one could be involved violence against women without knowing it.
Other contributors were there to share their personal experiences.
The report features different sections like Understanding the Issues in Monitoring Social Media on the Trends of Misogyny and Tech-Facilitated Gender-based Violence, presented by Blessing Oladunjoye, Findings From Social Media Monitoring on the Trends on Misogyny and Tech-Facilitated Gender Based Violence, Simple Cased Studies of Social Media Trends and Incidence on Misogyny and Tech-Facilitated Gender Based Violence, and Various Reports and Highlights From Focus Group Discussions on Trends of Misogyny and Tech-Facilitated Gender-Based Violence in Nigeria, and Effects of Misogyny on Women, Possible Response Mechanism, and Next Step Actions.
Misogyny was described as hatred, dislike or prejudice against women, or a situation that describes women in derogatory manner, and misogyny and online violence on women can have far reaching effects on its victims.
The effects according the reports could force girls or women to conform to societal pressures, often against their will; it can break the will power of women and aim to reduce women’s participation and contribution in the society.
Mysogyny, it was said “could cause psychological harm, leading to a defeatist attitude and stalled ambitions in women.”
Other social effects it could have on its victims are “It limits the potential of women and can destroy ambition, confining women to societal stereotypes and it leads to depression, suicidal thoughts and stigmatization.”
Concluding and in response, members of the public were enjoined to continue to create more awareness, educate people and engage in online support networks, support victims and confront misogyny when witnessed. The need to involve religious leaders and community organisations was emphasized, as well as to advocate and enforce laws against online gender-based violence. The society was asked to encourage responsible social media practices and collaborate with institutions to create awareness to stop misogyny, promote inclusive and respectful language and challenge sexist attitudes and behaviour, as well as educate children from a young age about gender equality among others.
In his own remarks, Mr. Otufofunrin, President JFC expressed his appreciation to the participants at the presentation and to the various organisations that sponsored the works.
